How to choose your saddle according to your riding style
Choosing the right saddle all depends on your position on the bike. For a straight back position (90°), opt for a very wide saddle with gel, ideal for outings. If you are slightly bent over (60°), an intermediate saddle offers a good compromise between comfort and performance. Finally, for a sporty position (30°), choose a a narrow saddle with a thin nosen designed to minimise pressure and improve performance.
TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BIKE RIDE:
For optimal saddle adjustment, several criteria are essential for effective posture.First, ensure that the saddle is suited to your posture (for example, back inclined at 60°).Adjust the height to allow for natural leg extension, and the angle for comfortable support. Finally, adjust backwards and forwards to maintain perfect alignment between your knees and pedals.
1. Determining the saddle height (part 1):
For a perfectly adjusted bicycle, measure your inseam length. You will need a hardcover book, a tape measure and a pencil.Stand with your back against a wall, barefoot and with your feet 15 to 20 cm apart.Place the book between your legs, move it up to your perineum and mark the wall above the book.Measure the distance between this mark and the floor. This measurement is essential for choosing the ideal frame size, ensuring your comfort and safety.
1. Determining the saddle height (part 2):
The right formula for a well-adjusted saddle
Multiply your inseam measurement by 0.883.
Example: 89 cm → 78.6 cm between the bottom bracket and the saddle.
This is an excellent starting point for comfortable cycling.
2. Adjusting the saddle angle:
Adjust the angle of your saddle for optimal comfort.
Using a spirit level, place it on the front, between the centre and the tip.
Ensure it is straight. Then adjust according to how it feels after several rides.
3. How to measure your sit-bone width
Measure your sit bones in 4 steps:
- Place 2 pieces of corrugated cardboard on a flat stool.
- Sit upright on them and press down for 1 minute.
- Stand up, locate the marks and trace their centre.
- Measure the gap:this is the width between your sit bones.
This information is key to choosing a saddle that is suited to your body type.
3. Adjusting the saddle setback:
The perfect position is a matter of millimetres.
The front of your knee should be aligned with the pedal axle.
With the crank horizontal, check your posture while seated.
Adjust the saddle forwards or backwards to correct your position.
